Description of General Responsibilities
The Web Developer will design, develop and maintain new websites, plugins, applications, and solutions for web-based communications at VCUarts. This will involve working with existing graphic identity standards, Content Management Systems, migration and maintenance of data or content, and training staff in developed solutions. The Web Developer, reporting directly to the Senior Web Developer, will work collaboratively with the other members of the VCUarts Communications team as well as with the School’s various academic departments on content creation, design, development, and maintenance.

Qualifications
The Web Developer will be interested in diving head first into the latest web-based technologies and will be able to work within established frameworks and processes, while remaining agile and excited at the opportunity to learn new methods.

The Web Developer will be able to think both linearly and analytically, while being able to be creative and curious in order to explore and try new techniques and methods.

The Web Developer should be adaptable, resourceful, and able to develop effective solutions to problems. An understanding for when it’s better to go for the “quick win” and when it’s better to drive through a comprehensive technical solution is a must.

The Web Developer must have demonstrated success in working with designers to develop solutions which are aesthetically beautiful as well as functional.

The Web Developer must have knowledge of or experience working with typography, grid systems, brand identity systems, and other graphic tools implemented with the user experience in mind.

A Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as Digital Media, Graphic Design/UX, Computer Science, Engineering or Information Systems, is preferred, or the equivalent in professional training and coursework with evidence of high quality coding.

-Expert in HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript.

-Expert with cross-platform, cross-browser testing and troubleshooting.

-Expert in WordPress; experience with WordPress Multisite and developing and releasing WP plugins/themes or contributing to Core is preferred.

-Experience with modern development workflows and software, i.e. Git and Vagrant.

-Ability to write and review development documentation.

-Ability to translate project requirements into seamless digital solutions.

-Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.

-Demonstrated ability to solve problems independently and use available resources.

-Proven ability to attend to details and meet deadlines.

-Ability to understand and comply with University, State, and school policies, procedures, and guidelines.

-Strategic and analytic thinker, who exhibits engagement, creativity, problem solving skills and organizational skills.

-Ability to work in a diverse environment is required.

-Ability to develop and maintain favorable external and internal relationships with the various departments within School of the Arts and at the University level.

-Excellent interpersonal and teaming skills and the ability to effectively and positively interact with a diverse range of people.

-Proven ability to explain complex information to non-technical audiences.

-Ability to create designs or collaborate with designers to develop aesthetically stunning and functional web solutions.

-Experience or potential to mentor undergraduate student interns.

-Substantial experience in fast-paced, complex work environments; exceptional communication skills, including listening, writing, and speaking skills; and exceptional customer service skills.

-Experience managing, conveying and interpreting the needs of artists and designers.

-Experience in development and best practices for bulk email delivery.

Department Hiring Range: $47,000-$60,000
Classified (full-time)
Hours/Week: 40 hours/week
Normal work days: Monday-Friday
Normal work hours: 8:30am-5:00pm
